Tips for Eating Healthy During the Holidays From the Weight Loss Experts at Purple Lotus Aesthetics

The holidays are here, and that means lots of chances to eat and drink way too much. The good news is, you don’t have to start 2019 toting around a lot of extra pounds. Here are six simple ways to prevent overindulging while you celebrate.

Fill up on vegetables
Everyone knows vegetables are healthy, but most veggies are also full of fiber and lower in calories than a lot of other foods, including meat and bread. When you eat your vegetables first, you’ll be less likely to overindulge in foods that are high in fats and calories. Plus, you’ll be getting lots of important vitamins and minerals that can help keep your metabolism in top shape so you’ll burn more calories. Worried the vegetable options at the next potluck will be a little too bland? Bring a dish of your own to share with others.

Don’t eat “because it’s there”
During the holidays, there are plenty of delicious foods to tempt your palate. But instead of wolfing down everything you see, choose the foods that appeal to you most and leave the less-appealing options for another time. While you’re eating, be mindful about the way you feel. Once you’re satisfied, stop. Or at least try taking a minute or two before asking for seconds. That might be all the time your tummy needs to tell you it’s full. If you do go back for seconds, opt for really small portions. You can always go back for thirds.

Don’t skip meals
Skipping meals means it’s a lot more likely you’ll overeat once food is in front of you, and it also means you’re more likely to opt for unhealthy options instead of taking your time to make smart choices. Eat a good breakfast and a healthy lunch full of protein and fiber to prevent you from feeling hungry, and before going out, try an apple with peanut butter to blunt those hunger pangs.

Stay active
Being active keeps your metabolism revved so your body can burn more calories. After a big meal, try taking a walk to jump-start the calorie-burning process and to stave off the inevitable “food coma.” Or incorporate an outdoor activity like sledding or cross-country skiing if you’re spending your holiday vacation in a snowy locale.

Think before you drink
Holiday cookies and candies aren’t the only high-calorie hurdles you’ll need to clear. That glass of eggnog? It’s got about 340 calories — more than 400 if you a little rum. That decadent peppermint mocha with whipped cream floating on top? You’re looking at about 410 calories. Even an innocent cup of cocoa can have well over 200 calories in it. You don’t have to abstain — just be aware of the calories. And maybe swap one of these drinks out for your dessert. To cut back on the fattening effects of liquor, consider cutting alcoholic drinks with seltzer water and alternating drinks with a glass of water. (Bonus: Water helps combat the dehydrating effects of alcohol.)

Don’t deprive yourself
The holiday season comes once a year, and holiday obligations can be stressful all on their own. Don’t add to your stress by worrying incessantly over your food and drink choices. It might sound counterintuitive, but excess stress can make you overeat too. So relax, enjoy yourself and indulge a bit — just try not to overdo it. And if you do “slip” and eat too much of a “bad” food, don’t beat yourself up. Once the holidays are over, we have lots of options to can help you get your diet and your healthy lifestyle back on track.
